Profiles in Telehealth: Will Poon - Business Operations Manager
Get to know Wheel Business Operations Manager, Will Poon!
What’s your role at Wheel?
As a Business Operations Manager, I support leadership and teams in making strategic data driven decisions and improve business processes so Wheel can better serve our clients and their patients around the US.I manage data analytics by building out the underlying data infrastructure and business intelligence dashboards our teams use to measure their performance alongside our company OKRs. I love working with our teams to help them understand their data and find insights we can use to make a greater impact on our work.
What’s your background? What did you do before working with Wheel?
I went to Cornell University for undergrad and started in sales and marketing after graduating. After undergrad I started my own commercial window tinting business with clients including JFK airport! I also built a startup accelerator program at Communitas America focused on underrepresented entrepreneurs. Then I went back to school for my MBA at Cornell Tech so I could work with fast growing startups like Wheel!
I grew up in New York City where I currently live with my wife Annie (who I met at Cornell!). I love cooking, eating, reading, traveling, and hiking. We just came back from Yosemite and Acadia National Parks! Once things open up, we have a list of other places to travel to.
Why did you join the Wheel team?
I joined Wheel in June of 2020 after my MBA as I was looking for a startup that had the potential to make life better for millions of people. One way to do that was in healthcare, which is one of the most important things in everyone’s lives. As a Business Operations Manager, I get to work with our team to measure and improve our performance by using data. It’s exciting to be able to create tools and see other people use them daily to improve their work at Wheel.
A day in the life looks like diving into our data for insights, working with teammates to see how we can help improve their work through data, and building dashboards and tools that people can use.
What’s your recent Wheel Moment of Reward?
When I was on the Operations team, we would communicate frequently with Wheel clinicians to see if they had issues with our platform or even just to share feedback. It was amazing being able to speak with clinicians and know how dedicated they were to providing great care for their patients.
Currently, I love working with our teams to dive into our data and see the excitement that comes from understanding it and finding new ways to leverage it to make better decisions at Wheel.
What do you think the future of healthcare holds?
The Coronavirus is not something people are thankful for, but what it has done is accelerate innovation in healthcare. Though telehealth existed previously, millions of people are now using it for the first time, including myself! It has the ability to bring care to people who can’t leave their homes, who have trouble traveling to a medical clinician, or have financial barriers. It really meets them where they’re at, wherever they are.
I’m excited about how patients will get easier access to great medical care than ever before while allowing clinicians to have greater control over their lives. It’s amazing to be living through a pandemic and how medical innovation and technology has allowed us to find a vaccine and medication so quickly.
Thanks, Will, for all your hard work with The Wheel Team! We appreciate everything you do.
