Telemedicine Physician Jobs in Missouri
Find work opportunities and resources for telemedicine physician jobs in Missouri.
As a shortage of healthcare workers continues to stress the U.S. healthcare system, Missouri also faces this same crisis. Around 1 in 5 Missourians live in an area suffering from a shortage of primary care physicians, leaving these residents unable to access timely care.
Missouri needs more doctors, and to address this crisis, many telehealth companies are hiring at a rapid rate in the Show-Me State.
How To Become a Remote Physician in Missouri
All clinicians must adhere to the same standards and qualifications, whether they practice telemedicine or work in an in-person healthcare facility.
Those interested in a career in virtual care in Missouri must take the traditional medical education and training path, and become either a board-eligible or board-certified physician. To practice telehealth in Missouri, you’ll need to take these steps:
Education: You’ll first need to obtain a bachelor’s degree, before going on to earn a Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited institution.
Exams: Towards the end of medical school, you’ll need to complete the first portion of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE).
Residency: Once you receive your medical degree, the next step is to choose a specialty and apply for residency programs in that field. Emergency medicine, internal medicine, and family medicine are excellent choices if you wish to pursue a career in telemedicine. Many telehealth companies seek out candidates with these specialties, as they tend to treat a broad range of health conditions and patient demographics.
Become licensed to practice medicine in Missouri: To legally practice medicine in Missouri, you must pass the last portion of the USMLE exam. Those seeking licensure as a DO must complete the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX-USA). Finally, you’ll need to submit an application for medical licensure to the Missouri Board of Healing Arts and an application fee of $75.
Board certification: To obtain board certification, you need to pass the ABMS exam. Note that some virtual care positions require doctors to be board certified.
Requirements for Remote Physicians in Missouri
Working as a remote physician can be a great way to supplement your income, and it provides you with the opportunity to maintain a flexible schedule. An array of both full-time and part-time remote work positions are available in Missouri for MDs and DOs.
Once you become licensed and receive board certification, you can choose which type of virtual care role suits you best whether you’re located in Kansas City, St. Louis, Springfield, or elsewhere in the state.
Here’s what you should be aware of before applying:
Work-from-home physicians: Remote doctors need to adhere to the same standard of care as their peers who treat patients in person. The key difference is that instead of seeing patients in an office-setting, telehealth physicians use technology to complete synchronous (video or phone) and asynchronous (chat) consultations. Note that virtual care doctors can only legally treat patients who are physically located in the state where they have a medical license.
Additional training: The standard of care in telemedicine is the same as for in-person care, and there is no state-mandated training you’ll need to complete in order to practice remote care. However, telehealth companies typically offer onboarding for doctors to become familiar with technology and platforms relevant to virtual care. This usually also includes best practices for good webside manner.
Necessary documentation: When you’re ready to apply for telemedicine jobs, make sure to update your resume and gather the appropriate paperwork documenting your education and credentials.
When telehealth companies are hiring, they’ll often post open positions on sites like Indeed, ZipRecruiter, Glassdoor, and LinkedIn. These job posting sites are an excellent place to start your search for virtual care roles.
