How to Become a Remote Nurse Practitioner

As a certified nurse practitioner, you can now choose to explore myriad job opportunities in Illinois, from Rockford to Chicago to Springfield. These include the full-time and part-time remote work opportunities available, including telemedicine.

If you want to become a remote nurse practitioner (also referred to as a telemedicine nurse practitioner) or work-at-home nurse practitioner, here’s what you should know first:

  • Remote nurse practitioner or work-from-home nurse practitioner: These nurse practitioners can live outside the area of the health care institution in which they work. There may be some on-site patient care or other tasks at the health care provider’s facility.
  • Additional training: The standard of patient care in telehealth is the same as in-person care. There is no state-mandated training specific to virtual care. However, telehealth companies often provide training to educate clinicians on how to use various technologies and platforms as well as best practices for good webside manner.
  • Documentation: When applying for remote jobs, be sure to include an updated resume and proper documentation of your credentials and education.

Telehealth companies often post open positions on job posting sites like Indeed, ZipRecruiter, Glassdoor, and LinkedIn, so this is a great place to start looking for virtual care opportunities. Wheel matches clinicians with virtual care opportunities and has a variety of positions available for NPs in Illinois.

Illinois Nurse Practitioner FAQs

Can a nurse practitioner have their own practice in Illinois?

The state legislature of Illinois does not allow nurse practitioners to run and operate their own practice. NPs in Illinois can only serve patients in collaboration with a supervising physician who dictates in writing which services, prescriptions, and procedures NPs are allowed to provide.

In what states can NPs practice independently? Is Illinois one of them?

A state must offer full-practice authority to permit independent practice by NPs. As a reduced-practice-authority state, Illinois does not allow nurse practitioners to practice independently. They must have a written collaboration agreement with a physician in place that clearly states the types of care and treatments an NP may provide. Want to know more? Review our clinician FAQs.

Are there remote NP jobs in Illinois?

Some employers require a certain amount of on-site hours (dictated in their job descriptions). Many NP opportunities in Illinois, however, allow potential applicants to cut out the commute and work from home.

Are there part-time NP remote jobs in Illinois?

Remote NP roles in Illinois are available on a full-time or part-time basis. While many will dictate which hours they need you active, many employers also offer flexibility within a set window of operational hours.
