Requirements for Remote Nurse Practitioners in California

Aspiring remote nurse practitioners in California must first become registered nurses in California , which means completing the steps outlined by the California Board of Registered Nursing.

As of January 1st, 2023, nurse practitioners in CA can practice independently after completing the practice requirement of 4,600 hours or three years. Up until reaching that requirement, they must follow a standardized protocol developed and approved by a supervising physician. NPs may only practice independently in states with full-practice authority. As a state with restricted practice authority, NPs cannot practice independently in California but may obtain a license upon meeting the practice requirement after January 2023.
