Profiles in Telehealth: A Family Nurse Practitioner Finds Rewards in Extending Care Access
We asked family nurse practitioner Rosa L. to describe the rewards she’s found in transitioning to virtual care, and how Wheel is helping her achieve her practice goals faster than she anticipated.
What’s your background? What did you do before practicing telemedicine?
I have been a family practice nurse practitioner since 2015. I started off in urgent care, then I moved to inpatient care, and I’m now back to urgent care. I have been working with Wheel for over a year now providing synchronous and asynchronous telemedicine.
What’s your life like outside of work?
I love anything outdoors — especially fishing, kayaking, and boating. Currently I’m in the process of setting up a non-profit company that allows me (and my fiancé) to raise money for those in need while holding fishing tournaments and doing something we love!
What brought you to virtual care?
I decided about a year and a half ago to pursue telemedicine. I feel that it is a much needed healthcare delivery method considering our current COVID-19 crisis. Through telehealth, I’ve been able to provide care to those in New York who are unable to visit their PCPs as usual. My goal is to eventually work full-time in telemedicine, as it allows me to control my schedule while delivering quality care to those in need.
What’s your recent Wheel Moment of Freedom?
Since starting with Wheel, I’ve realized I can achieve my goals much sooner than I had anticipated. Wheel has allowed me flexibility with my current schedule as I continue on my journey towards full-time telemedicine.
What do you think the future of healthcare holds?
I’m excited about what telemedicine has in store for me, but even more so, what I’m able to provide to patients without great access to healthcare. I work in a rural health community, and the access to good quality healthcare can be hard to find. With our current COVID crisis, I’m able to help those who cannot get out to their providers safely.
Thanks, Rosa, for being an essential member of the #WheelCareTeam! We appreciate all that you do.
