How to Find the Best Telemedicine Jobs
Learn the secrets to sourcing the most sought-after roles in telemedicine and get on your way to great pay, a more flexible schedule, and exciting new career opportunities.
Just like traditional medicine, not all telemedicine jobs are shaped alike. Bonuses, benefits, schedules, software, patient volumes, and salary are all variables that can distinguish the most sought after roles from more “entry-level” telemedicine jobs.
So, how do you seek out the best jobs in telemedicine? It’s not as easy as simply asking colleagues for their opinions on a hospital, medical director, or clinical management group. Telemedicine jobs are fairly new and there may not be anyone you trust and admire with significant experience working in virtual health care.
We asked our recruiters to divulge the best ways to find the very best jobs in telehealth. Follow these five steps to finding your next opportunity.
1. Search Telemedicine-Specific Job Boards
While sites like Practice Match, Indeed, and even Google’s in-browser job search provide ample listings for physician and nurse practitioner positions, searching on a job board focused specifically on telehealth will provide the best results for telemedicine jobs.
First, telehealth-specific sites vet positions for quality. Since telemedicine is a fairly new industry, you’ll want to ensure you are looking at reputable telehealth providers that will have quality software and technology in place, are in tune with the latest policy and regulatory changes, offer positive customer experiences, and can support your practice across state lines.
Second, telemedicine career sites have relationships with the best telemedicine companies and may be privy to positions that aren’t as widely published on other sites. Seasonal work during flu season, for example, can offer lucrative positions for providers wanting to supplement traditional work. Since positions need to be filled rather urgently, they may emerge for only a short period of time - before aggregator sites can feature them - and be filled before you know it.
Wheel is the only telehealth clinician network that focuses specifically on telemedicine jobs for physicians, specialists, and advanced practice providers in family medicine, urgent care, mental health, and other domains.

2. Work With a Telemedicine-Savvy Recruiter
Similar to targeted job boards, recruiters specializing in telehealth are your best bet for sourcing telemedicine jobs that best suit your situation and preferences. Especially if you are just getting started in telemedicine, recruiters can help demystify state licensure requirements, explain scheduling nuances, and highlight differences between telemedicine platforms and contracts. Think of your recruiter as your career coach and lean on them to help you throughout the entire process from search to start date.
If you plan to slowly transition from part-time telemedicine to full-time, recruiters can help keep an eye out for positions that you are looking for and alert you when a role comes up that fits your criteria.
Establishing good rapport and relationship with a trusted recruiter is a key component to elevating your career in telemedicine.
3. Get Licensed in Multiple States
Think of state licenses as enhanced degrees in the field of telemedicine. Often, the more licenses you have, the more valuable you will be to telemedicine companies because of your versatility. Also, certain state licenses hold more value than others.
In the United States, telemedicine providers must be licensed to provide care in the state in which the patient is seeking care. That means high population states like Texas, California, New York, and Florida carry higher patient demand, and providers with licenses in these states will often find greater job opportunities.
Also, consider getting licensed in one of the 26 interstate medical licensure compact states. These states are part of an agreement between state medical boards that make it easier to get licensed in other states that are part of the agreement (in an effort to expand healthcare accessibility). For more information, read our article on multi-state licensure for physicians.
4. Make Sure Your CV is Built for Today
Too often, candidates tack on new positions to (very) old resumes without taking the time to overhaul, clean up, and highlight achievements based on more recent positions. No one wants to review a three-page laundry list of old, irrelevant positions. Consider the roles and research that best pertain to the position you are applying for, and make sure those are prominently featured.
Recruiters and hiring managers skim resumes, so make sure yours is organized for scannability. How? Use bolding, different sized headers and subheads, and your best friend: bullets. And don’t rely on color to emphasize skills or achievements. Automated resume uploaders often strip out this type of formatting, and resumes may be printed in grayscale, losing the impact.
5. Network and Keep Up with Industry Events
If you are hoping to make telemedicine a full-time gig, you’ll want to build up your network just like you would with your traditional medicine colleagues. Not only will you learn about what’s next in telemedicine technology and industry, but you’ll be able to make connections with other telehealth practitioners and have candid conversations about pay, platforms, and the good/bad of working in telehealth.
Industry events like the American Telemedicine Association Conference are excellent locales for meeting like-minded providers. Also, check out regional telehealth events through the National Consortium of Telehealth Resource Centers. With more localized events featured every month, these offer opportunities to find providers nearby, or potentially even in your same town, that you can establish collegial relationships with.
